Prevent Hair Extensions Falling Out By Following a Few Basic Principles
The prospect of hair extensions falling out can be a worry when you consider extensions or first have your new hair fitted, Whilst hair extensions aren’t difficult to look after, they take a bit of getting used to in the first few days. We’re here to share with you a few simple tricks on how to prevent hair extensions falling out!
Firstly, before we begin to explain why extensions can fall out, it is important to remember that losing a few strands over the course of your hair extensions’ life span is completely normal! Whilst most of OUR clients NEVER lose a single extension, it can happen. We have the blisters on our hands from squeeeeezing those application tools as hard as we can, to make sure this hardly ever happens.
But remember, your hair is always in one of 3 hair growth stages. One of which is naturally shedding. If the average human – without hair extensions – loses around 100 natural hairs per day, over time this hair will fall away. If there is less hair in the micro ring with the extension strand, as a result, the ring can become looser than when first installed. It does not imply that they were fitted incorrectly.
If you do pull a couple out, do not panic. Hang on to them and your technician will put them back in for you.
Prevent Hair Extensions Falling Out Unnecessarily:
Before Fitting Wash Hair With a Clarifying Shampoo
Avoid conditioner and attend your appointment with straightened hair. The reason for doing so is because this type of shampoo removes any product build up from the hair. It is also important to attend your fitting with no product in your hair at all; this includes oils, hairspray, dry shampoo etc. This is to make sure your hair contains nothing that may affect the bond or ring and also helps to prevent slippage after installation.
We do find that some clients will come with dirty hair (especially to maintenance appointments). Excessive amounts of oil and build up of products that are mainly oil based does nothing to assist in the micro ring gripping the hair. It as the opposite effect.
It is also really unpleasant for the technician too.
Choose the Right Type of Hair Extensions for Your Hair Type.
Different hair types will work better with different methods of fitting, for instance oily hair should avoid fusion bonds and very fine soft hair will work better with micro rings or nano rings. Make sure you always speak to your technician about you hair type and which method will be best for you. This will increase the staying power of your extensions.
Make Sure You Know What Type of Ring You Will be Having.
There are 2 types of copper rings used for hair extension fitting: copper tubes and silicone lined rings. We always opt for, and recommend copper tubes, this is because they clamp flatter and tighter, lie flatter against your head and ultimately look more discreet within the hair. We also find they have better staying power that silicone lined as silicone rings can slip whilst brushing and washing over time. However, if your hair is prone to greasiness it is recommend to use silicone lined rings as they create a layer between the ring and your hair.
Take Care When Brushing Hair Extensions
Although this seems obvious – the way your brush your hair can greatly affect the position of your extensions. Invest in a loop brush or our Tangle Tamer as soon as your extensions are fitted. These brushes will not snag the extensions or the bonds/rings. The bristles of a normal paddle brush can snag and pull at extensions and ultimately cause them to slip or fall out.
Always Support the Hair Extensions When Brushing.
Hold your hand over the bonds as you brush, this helps to relieve the pressure on your hair. Brush the very ends out first then work your way up the hair, this is to stop aggressive brushing and protects the extensions. Work round the head gripping small sections of hair at the root where the rings or bonds are to take up all of the tension from brushing. **THIS IS FUNDAMENTALLY IMPORTANT**.
Hair Extensions Aftercare.
This has a massive impact. Choose an appropriate hair extension shampoo and hair extensions conditioner, and use the right technique. Use a quality oil to run through the ends, invest in some gorgeous smelling hair treatments, but make sure when using each product to avoid your bonds or rings. Neer apply the conditioner directly (always put it in your hands first) and never apply directly to the root area. Applying product or conditioner too close, can lubricate the bonds or rings and cause them to slip or fall out completely. Run oils and conditioners gently through the lower sections of the extensions hair only.
Use Caution When Hair is Wet
Hair extensions are porous and will soak up a lot of moisture. After shampooing they will be extra heavy. Your bonds are also most vulnerable when wet as they are not only lubricated, but are supporting extra weight. Always hang on to the tops of your extensions at this time and take extra care when brushing and blow drying.
Human Fatigue.
As a supplier this is something we have to explain to customers who buy hair to be fitted elsewhere. It is important to remember that hair extensions do take several hours to fit correctly, as well as being very straining on the technician’s hands and arms. If some extensions do slip it could be due to human fatigue, meaning the odd extension may not have been fitted as tightly as the others. Therefore, be understanding with the individual fitting your hair, choose a time for them that isn’t too late and allow time for a comfort break to rest their hands if they aren’t used to the pliers or heat.
