So you’ve finally chosen which method of extensions is best for you; now it’s time to learn how to look after your extensions. This article will focus on the correct aftercare routine for Stick Tip Hair Extensions.
What Are Stick Tip Hair Extensions?
‘Stick Tip’ refers the long, thin, ‘stick’ shaped bond at the top of each extension strand.’ This method can also be called ‘i-tip’ due to its shape. The strand is attached to the client’s hair using a micro ring or micro tube. The rings are then flattened with pliers to keep tightly in place.
How To Brush Stick Tip Hair Extensions
When brushing hair extensions always use a Tangle Teezer, Loop or soft bristle brush. These brushes are safer for both the extensions and your hair. We recommend brushing your hair every morning and evening before bed as a minimum. Start by brushing the ends of your hair, then moving up once smooth. Working from the bottom up puts less tension on the hair and prevents shedding. Always take care when brushing over the rings to avoid catching the hair between the scalp and micro ring.
How To Wash Stick Tip Hair Extensions
Always ensure you brush your hair extensions before and after washing. Doing so prevents the hair from tangling and having to resort to vigorous brushing which can be damaging to extensions. It is essential that you wash your hair in the shower rather than in the bath. Washing your hair under running water, in the direction that your hair grows is the most efficient way to remove hair product and avoid tangling. If you don’t have a shower, it is worth investing in an attachment for the bath tap so that hair doesn’t have to be swirled around in bath water.
We recommend not washing your hair for at least 48 hours after the initial fitting. The bonds are at their tightest at this point, so avoid putting the extra weight of water on your hair at this stage if possible.
Apply the shampoo to your hair by smoothing down the hair rather than in a scrubbing motion. To wash the scalp, gently massage with the fingertips, the aim is to avoid crossing the extensions over themselves which could cause tangling. Only apply conditioner to the mid-lengths down, this is to prevent lubricating the rings. Smooth through then run your fingers through the hair, leave for a few minutes before rinsing.

Investing in a good shampoo and conditioner is essential. Our hair care range has been designed specifically for hair extensions allowing you to get the most out of your hair extensions. Choose a sulphate and paraben free shampoo and conditioner that will thoroughly moisturise the hair.

How To Dry Stick Tip Hair Extensions
NEVER dry your hair by scrubbing and rough drying with a towel, this can be damaging and runs the risk of tangling. If you want to towel dry your hair, pat or squeeze dry the hair to remove as much water as possible.
Using a hair dryer will give the smoothest result. Use a low to medium heat setting and dry in a downwards motion. Start at the roots and work your way down using a round brush or using your fingers to keep the extensions tangle free as you dry.
How To Sleep In Hair Extensions
Hair extensions also need to be cared for when sleeping. Brush your hair until tangle free. Then apply some protein spray, leave in conditioner or argan oil. Finish by braiding your hair into one or two plaits, this allows the product to soak into the hair and also keeps it smooth until morning.
What About Swimming/Sports?
Hair should always be tied back is engaging in sports or swimming, this also applies to the gym.
When swimming it is important to remember that chlorine and salt water can affect your hair extensions in the same way it would your hair. They can cause dryness and even change the colour, particularly in blondes. After swimming wash your hair thoroughly and finish with some leave in conditioner or argan oil.
Will Suncream Damage Extensions?
Suncream shouldn’t damage your hair extensions, but it can cause a lightening effect in the sun. Try to avoid getting this product on your hair. If you want to protect your scalp, tie your hair up and wear a cap instead. Always wash your hair thoroughly to remove the product at the end of the day.
Can I Use Styling Tools On My Extensions?
The luxury of human extensions includes its ability to be styled with heated styling tools. However, just as with your hair too much heat on a high setting can be damaging. To protect your extensions against heat, spray with heat defense and use a low to medium heat setting. Take care when using heat on the rings and the extension tip with in them, heat can cause the rings to contract and can even melt the strand tip if the setting is too high.
Do Stick Tip Hair Extensions Require Maintenance Appointments?
All fitted hair extensions require maintenance appointments. Micro Ring extensions need maintenance every six to eight weeks. During this meeting, all rings will be replaced and moved up. The sections of hair the extensions are placed upon will be re-sectioned to protect your hair and prevent the extensions from slipping out.
I Need My Hair Extensions Removed, How Should I Do So?
